Hairspray 101
Featuring Chad Cardoos, Alchemy & FX
Are you using your hairspray properly? Many of us just lacquer and leave — but there’s an art to misting. Understanding when to use a light or strong hold can make a world of difference in the style and health of your strands.
Aerosol vs. Non-Aerosol
“When it comes to styling, I prefer to use aerosol sprays because you get more control and better coverage. Aerosols, when used properly, tend to be lighter and drier whereas non-aerosol tend to be heavier and wetter.”
For naturally curly hair, non-aerosol sprays are an ideal alternative to gels.
Know Your Hold
Working
Light HoldLight, flexible, non-sticky. Great for updos, soft waves, everyday blowouts.
Styling
Medium HoldThickens, volumizes, adds texture and shine. Ideal for bouncy curls and beach waves.
Finishing
Strong HoldMaximum hold for updos, slick ponytails, french twists. Use only when completely done styling.
“To create a flexible hold throughout a blow-out, apply a light spray to the brush throughout the blowout process. This will create more volume and bend in the hair for a soft, natural look that lasts.”
